Kaushalya smashed 56 off 41 deliveries!
Until I received the following e-mail message from a very close Indian friend of mine from UAE, I did not think of writing this article. My friend’s message read; ‘Congratulations on the Women’s World Cup last ball victory over England, the reigning champions.
The lionesses are as good as the lions!’ How one could keep silence after receiving such an encouraging message from a friend from a neighboring country – in both sense Kingdom and UAE and India and Sri Lanka.
Eshani Kaushalya smashed 56 off 41 deliveries to help Sri Lanka keep up with the required rate towards the end of the innings, in the World Cup match played against England in Mumbai. Hers as well as her team’s unwavering belief paid off.
In the process of Sri Lanka’s victory there were few record established:
* Sri Lanka won by one wicket off the last ball of the match – both are firsts in Women’s World Cup.
* Sri Lanka’s total of 244 is the highest by any team batting second in the World Cup.
* It is only the second successful run-chase of a target of 190 or more in 79 attempts in a World Cup game. The previous one was by New Zealand against India in 2009.
* Sri Lanka struck five sixes, including the final hit of the match. It is the first time any side has struck more than four sixes in a World Cup game against England and the second time in any ODI against them.
It was a fantastic match, wonderful cricketing shots and a courageous display of pure talent.
Opener Atapattu was stroking the ball better than Dilshan. Better luck for the lionesses this time after the lions lost the cup in the same venue to host India in the final.
Until then congratulations to the brave girls for beating the reigning champions England!
