Passing of Former Ambassador Christopher Van Hollen
The Embassy wishes to send our condolences to the family of Christopher Van Hollen, former Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Dr. Van Hollen passed away in Washington, DC on January 30 at the age of 90. Mr. Van Hollen was U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives in 1972-76.
Dr. Van Hollen was born in Maryland and served as a naval officer in World War II before pursuing an undergraduate education at Haverford College and a doctorate in political science from Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Van Hollen was a career member of the Foreign Service and his son Chris Van Hollen, Jr. has followed in service to the nation as the United States Representative for Maryland’s 8th congressional district.
The U.S. Embassy will have a condolence book for members of the public at the American Center, open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00am until 6:00pm.
