U.S. Opens Two Hospitals in Northern Sri Lanka

Colombo, 14 February,, (Asiantribune.com):

The U.S. Embassy opened two new hospitals at a cost of over $1,000,000 to provide services in conflict affected areas of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. On February 12, Deputy Chief of Mission William Weinstein opened Mulankavil Base Hospital in Kilinochchi and Oddusuddan Divisional Hospital in Mullaitivu during ceremonies attended by Government of Sri Lanka representatives including the Northern Province Ministry of Health.

Speaking at the opening, Mr. Weinstein said, “These two civilian hospitals will provide easier access to better and higher quality medical care to the people of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts. The U.S. Government is helping to improve the lives and health of some of the most vulnerable people in the North.”

In both locations, the U.S. Government funded construction of new central buildings including emergency treatment units, out-patient departments with four consultancy rooms, pharmacies, and basic labs. Each out-patient department will have seating for 60 people, and the capacity to treat 150-200 patients per day. Both hospitals will serve as regional medical centers for the surrounding populations.

The projects were done in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health. In Malunkavil the Government of Sri Lanka renovated the maternity ward to the old hospital, and in Oddusuddan the Government of Sri Lanka is also funding new medical staff quarters and a new preventive health building.

Since 2009, the U.S. Government has committed to funding 25 school and hospital projects in Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern Provinces, contributing more than $7 million in this effort to help communities rebuild and provide essential services to all people.
