Independence Day Celebrations in the State of Palestine
Representative Office of Sri Lanka in the State of Palestine marked the 65th anniversary of Independence at the Grand Park Hotel in Ramallah on 4th February 2013 with the participation of a large Representative gathering of invitees.
Diplomats, State Officials, business community, Sri Lanka expatriates graced the occasion along with the members of the Palestine – Sri Lanka Friendship Society. Before the function Dr. T. Jayasinghe, Representative of Sri Lanka in the State of Palestine, met President Mahmoud Abbas at his Office.
The President conveyed his greetings and best wishes to the people of Sri Lanka and President Mahinda Rajapaksa on this occasion and wished all the success to the celebration. He was associated with Chief of Staff Dr. Hussien Al-Araj who also attended the celebration as the Chief Guest.
Function commenced with lighting the traditional Oil Lamp and the singing of the national anthems of Sri Lanka and Palestine. Then after Mowlaui Sheikh Rafat representing the Islamic community and Father Elyas Awwad representing the Orthodox Church, blessed Sri Lanka.
Mr. Siraj Ahamed, Attaché of the Representative Office read the Independence Day Messages of. President, Prime Minister, and Minister of External Affairs.
This was followed by the welcome address of Dr. T. Jayasinghe, Representative. He explained the progress made in the country after the defeat of terrorism and thanked the Palestinian Government for mobilizing the Islamic countries at the Human Rights Council in Geneva in favor of Sri Lanka. He also thanked the Tourist Agents and the Tea Traders for helping Sri Lanka.
Dr. Hussien Al-Araj, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Office in his reply thanked Sri Lanka for supporting its effort to get recognition at U. N. O. He valued the long standing friendship and solidarity between the two countries.
Unique feature at this function for the second year in succession was the ward of “Lanka Pranama” awards to three distinguished citizens of the Palestine community. They were Mr. Yasser Herbawi the maker of the internationally famous Kufiya, Director General of NISSA FM Radio Women, Mrs. Maysoun Odeh-Gangat and Mr. Anwar Jayousi of FATEN the Gremeen Style micro funding Organization.
The reception continued for two hours and all guests were presented with gift bags of Pure Ceylon Tea.
