Pak for promoting inter-civilisation harmony

Islamabad, 16 June (Asiantribune.com): Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has emphasized the need for promoting inter-faith, inter-civilization and inter-cultural harmony for peace and development in the country.

Addressing the seminar on Islam and Sikh religion in historic prospective in connection with 400th death anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev in Lahore on Thursday, Mr. Shaukat Azizi said Islam is a religion of peace, understanding, tolerance and harmony and it has great links with Sikh religion which also believes in these things.

Minorities in Pakistan has been given equal rights in the Constitution and the government is taking all possible measure to protect their rights, he said and assured the Sikh community of all possible measures to be made for renovation, preservation and protection of holy places of Sikhs.

He announced special development package for holy places of Sikh community in Lahore, Nankana Sahib and Hasan Abdal besides setting up a new university in memory of Baba Guru Nanak.

He also announced that the government has adopted a very liberal visa policy for Sikhs and they are free to visit any time and any place in the country.

Earlier in his address Dr. Darshan Singh from Chandigarh expressed gratitude to the Pakistan government for facilitating Sikh community to perform their religious rites.

Minister for religious affairs Ijazul Haq also spoke on the occasion.
