President Mahinda handed over 95 houses in Ratnapur to War Heroes

The 95 houses which were built and completed in the Ratnapura district under the eleventh phase of the 'Api Wenuwen Api' housing project for war heroes were given ownership yesterday (02 March) by Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The main event was held at Udumaththa Mihindu Maha Vidyalaya this morning. Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was also present at the occasion.

Presiden Mahinda Rajapaksa ceremonially handed over the first house to Lance Corporal WGS Weerasekara of the Sri Lanka Army in the presence of the Maha Sangha and distinguished at Thoranagoda in Eheliyagoda.

The Ministry of Defence has launched the Api Wenuwen Api housing project with the aim of uplifting the living standard of war heroes and their families by assisting them to build their own houses. This project is being carried out under the guidance and close supervision of Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chairperson of the Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa.

Under the eleventh phase 57 army, 24 navy and 14 air force war hero families received new houses from the President. In addition gift parcels of household equipment and school stationery and bags were also distributed among the war hero families.

So far the project has completed nine phases in Kandy, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Badulla, Galle, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kalutara, Kegalle, Polonnaruwa and Gampaha districts.
Under the Api Wenuwen Api project not only the war heroes but also the whole society in which he lives gets benefitted. The basic infrastructure facilities like roads, electricity, telecommunication, water and sanitation facilities are also upgraded in the area. Special attention is given to upgrade the local school.

Members of the Maha Sangha, Western Province Governor WJM Lokubandara, Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province Maheepala Herath, Ministers Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, WDJ Senevirathna, Wasudeva Nanayakkara, members of parliament, Presidential Secretary Mr. Lalith Weeratunga, President of the MoD Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, tri forces commanders, police chief, provincial councilors government officials, officials of the Seva Vanith Unit, religious dignitaries and a large numbers of people were present at the occasion.
