Provide security to Begumganj minority: HC

Dhaka, 04 March, (Asiantribune.com):

The High Court on Sunday directed the government to provide immediately security to the religious minority people attacked allegedly by the opposition party in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali.

The HC order will remain effective until any further instruction, the court said.

An HC bench comprising of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Hoque also ordered the authorities concerned to submit a report in 10 days after complying with the HC order.

The court issued a rule upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to take legal action against those who attacked the minorities and damaged their houses and temple on Thursday.

The Hindus at Begumganj in Noakhali remain in fear of further attack after opposition party torched, vandalised and looted a temple and many houses.

The HC further directed the authorities concerned to repair the damaged houses and temple.
The court issued the suo-moto rule following a report published in The Daily Star on Saturday with headline "Victims feel insecure".

On Thursday, the Hindu families lost almost everything in the attacks and were living in the open with many of the victims remaining unfed.

Activists of Jamaat and Shibir along with BNP men launched the attacks on the Hindus soon after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 delivered death penalty for Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
