Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleka elected Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council

Asia’s unanimous choice

Geneva, 20 June, (Asiantribune.com): Dayan Jayatilleka, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office in Geneva , was elected Vice President of the Human Rights Council, yesterday (19 June). The Asian Group unanimously endorsed Ambassador Jayatilleka as its representative to the new Bureau of the HRC. The Asian Group unanimously endorsed Ambassador Jayatilleka as its representative to the new Bureau of the HRC. Sri Lanka is a founding member of the new HRC, which is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly. Currently Sri Lanka is the Co-ordinator of the Asian Group.

The Ambassador Doru Romulus Costea of Romania was elected as President of the new Council. Uruguay, Djibouti and the Netherlands were also elected as other Vice Presidents of the Council, representing Latin America, Africa and Western Europe respectively in the Bureau.

Last week, Ambassador Jayatilleka was elected as Chairman of the Governing Body of the ILO for 2007-2008.
