US-North Korea Conflict: is it taking a turn for the worse?

Hemantha Abeywardena writes from London…

During the past few days, it was just usual rhetoric, sabre-rattling and show of strength around the Korean peninsula. The situation, however, started evolving dangerously since Tuesday after both the Pentagon and the State Department collectively express their dismay at the Korean threat.

North Korea says it has formally informed the Pentagon about what it called the ratification of a merciless nuclear strike against the US.

By branding the weapon they have as cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified, North Korea has been successful in keeping the US in a very difficult position; so far, the US appear to be taking a defensive approach while taking the threat seriously.

Military analysts became worried after China summoned the envoys of North Korea, South Korea and the US to urge their respective countries to exercise restraint and defuse tension. There are unconfirmed reports that China is massing its troops along the border between North Korea and China while anticipating a dangerous escalation.
