China Pledges Continued Support to Sri Lanka's Development

Beijing, 29 May, (Asiantribune.com):

Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank), Mr. Li Ruogu, called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the China World Hotel this morning.

Headquartered in Beijing, the Export-Import Bank of China is a state bank solely owned by the Chinese government and provides overseas development funds to promote international economic and trade cooperation.

President Rajapaksa, who is currently on a four-day state visit to China, expressed gratitude for the assistance rendered by the Bank for several development projects in Sri Lanka and pointed out that through those projects, improved infrastructure facilities in the country have enhanced the living standards of the people.

The President further said that his government hopes that the Bank will continue to support Sri Lanka’s future development initiatives.

Exim Bank Chairman said he is satisfied with the progress made in the development cooperation with Sri Lanka and assured the Bank’s continued support, particularly in the areas of road development, the construction of highways and water supply projects.

The Bank has provided financial assistance to 37 development projects in the country during the past seven years, including the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port and the Southern Expressway.

"We have suffered from terrorism for 30 years,” President Rajapaksa said. “Now there is peace in the country. The main priority of the government today is economic and social development.”

“My government has deviated from the city-centered development strategy and embarked on the development of rural areas by enhancing infrastructure facilities,” President Rajapaksa further said. “We have completely changed the development pattern inherited from Colonial rule, and our people are reaping the benefits of it.”

President Rajapaksa invited Mr. Ruogu to visit Sri Lanka.
