UN Organized Civil Society Meeting - A Farce

By K.T.Rajasingham
Colombo, 28 August, (

Journalists and residents of the Northern Province were denied entry to the Civil Society Meeting organized by the UN Office in Jaffna and attended by the Visiting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

It was intriguing why media personnel were denied entry to the so called Civil Society Meeting organized by mysterious characters, to talk about the present the situation in Sri Lanka, North and especially about the Tamils.

The civil society meeting which was held in the premises of UNHCR, located at the Temple Road, Jaffna and it was still unclear who organized that meeting.

This writer in his capacity as the Editor of 'Asian Tribune' and also as a person from Jaffna went along with Velayutham Dayanidh alias Daya Master to participate, as well as to observe the proceedings of the Civil Society meeting.

At the very gate, we were stopped and entry was denied. Then we waited outside the UNHCR building and watched the developing scenario.

While we were standing outside the gate of the UNHCR building, we heard from those manning the gate of the UNHCR office building telling that already 10 invitees had gone inside and another 15 would be allowed in to attend the civil society meeting.

It was highly ironical that the organizers of the Civil Society meeting – of course a vested interest group has manipulated ingeniously to allow only a group of people, who will tell the UN Human Rights Commission, who is supposed to be the Guardian of Human Rights and Freedom, the harrowing tales – the orchestrated stories coached by the vested interest group.

When asked why journalists like us were not allowed to participate in the civil society meeting, there was no response from the Christian clergy who was wearing a clergy vestment and the one who turned away all those who tried to enter inside the UN Office to participate in the Civil Society meeting.

Asian Tribune learnt that the Clergy as Father Sebestian from Mannar and he was the one along with a lay member from Vavuniya, brought 15 invitees to meet the UN Human Rights Commissioner.

Asian Tribune also learnt that this Fr. Sebestian as the representative of a Citizen Committee and the UN has selected him to organize the Civil Society meeting.

It was highly ironical that journalists were denied entry to attend the civil society meeting attended by the UN Human Rights Commission who is supposed to be the guardian of rights of freedom .

One of those invitees organized by Fr. Sebestian was Mrs. Ananthy Sasitharan (Elilan - the former LTTE political czar of Trincomalee) who was responsible for the closure of Mavil Aru which triggered war against the LTTE.

Mrs. Ananthy Sasitharan (Elilan) is a candidate in the Northern Provincial Council on the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi ticket and her advertisement appearing in newspapers soliciting votes is also given in this piece.

UN Human Rights Commissioner meeting a TNA candidate amounts to the gross violation of the election laws.

The UN, was supposed to play an impartial role and it was unfortunate that they have considered to choose mysterious characters to select invitees to participate in the so called civil society meetings.
