Candidate Ankajan Farther Ramanathan Arrested

Colombo, 29 August, (Asiantribune.com):

Ramanathan, father of Ankajan, Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s Jaffna District Chief Organizer and one of the lead candidates of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance, has been arrested yesterday alleging that he attempted to shoot down another UPFA candidate on 27th evening at Chavakachcheri.

It was alleged that Ankajan’s father Ramanathan, was armed with a handgun, and opened fire on Sarvananthan and his group.

It was further alleged that Ramanthan attempted to shoot down Kumaru Sharvananda, an SLFP candidate from Jaffna District, contesting in the Northern Provincial Council election.

Earlier, reports revealed of an incident that took place in Chavakachcheri on 27th evening around 7.30 pm and one Kanagasingham Nandakumar (aged 29 yrs), a supporter of the SLFP candidate Kumaru Sharvananda had received gunshot injury and admitted to the Chavakachcheri hospital.

Also another supporter of Kumaru Sharvananda one Viswarajan Viswarupan (30 yrs old) sustained injuries due to stone pelting and too was admitted to the hospital.

Yesterday, UPFA candidates Kumaru Sharvanandan, S.Agilathas, S.Remaddious and Ponnampalam conducted a press meet at the Jaffna Press Club and urged Ramanathan, father of Ankajan be arrested immediately.

Ruling party candidate Kumaru Sharvanandan, a chauffer of the former MP Maheswaran, alleged that Mr. Ramanathan shot at him, but fortunately survived as the bullet whistle passed him without hurting.

He was a former member member of the Chavakachcheri Pradeshiya Sabah member of the UNP and subsequently joined the ruling party and was selected as a SLFP candidate, insisted that Mr. Ramanathan should be arrested and tried for attempted murder and for shooting his supporters.

Asian Tribune learnt that Mr. Ramanathan will be produced in the courts today by the Jaffna police.
