Visas issued for Sri Lankan team to visit Saudi

Colombo, 17 July, (Asiantribune.com): Saudi Arabia has at last relented and agreed to issue the required visas for the Sri Lankan team led by the Sri Lanka’s Acting Foreign Minister Hussein Bhaila to visit Saudi Arabia. The primary mission of this team is to seek a pardon from the parents of an infant who died under the care of teenage Rizana Nafeek, Sri Lankan housemaid. She was sentenced on 16 June to be beheaded by a three-member bench of the Dawadmi High Court in Riyad. Acting Foreign Minister Hussein Bhaila told the Asian Tribune that Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador called on him at the Ministry yesterday afternoon and assured that Saudi Arabia’s visa to Sri Lankan team will be issued. He also informed that Mohammed Al Ali, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Sri Lanka, discussed with him matters relating to the death sentence imposed on Rizana Nafeek.

During the meeting, Minister said that the Ambassador assured to extend all possible assistance to the Government of Sri Lanka. Ambassador. He added that they have arranged the first meeting with the Saudi dignitaries on the 20th of this month.

Bhaila told Asian Tribune that the Sri Lankan government has requested meetings with all relevant individuals, including a meeting with Mr & Mrs Naif Jiziyan Khalaf Al Otaibi, the father and mother of the deceased 4-month-old boy. The meeting with the parents of the deceased boy is to plead for clemency.

The team intends to leave for Riyad, Saudi Arabia on Friday 19 July.
