Ceylon Chamber of Commerce sponsored Trade Mission to Russia

Colombo, 20 July, ( Sri Lanka Russia Business Council operating under the aegis of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Trade and Investment Promotion Mission to Russia and Ukraine from 6th to 12th September, 2007. The Mission is coinciding with 50 years of bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation.

The Mission will be lead by Prof G L Peiris, Minister of Export Development and International Trade. The main objective of this mission is to strengthen trade ties, source suitable business partners, promote investments and joint ventures between the two countries and offer an opportunity for participants to obtain a better understanding of the business environment in Russia.

The delegation plans to have one to one business meetings with Russian and Ukrainian companies with matching business interests and visit industrial plants/factories in Russia and Ukraine. The delegation will also have meetings with the Chambers of Commerce, counterpart Trade Associations and relevant Government Authorities. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation has confirmed their fullest co-operation to make this mission a success.

Based on initial discussions with the Chambers of Commerce and interested parties, Udayanga Weeratunga, Sri Lankan Ambassador in Russia has indicated that the following sectors would have high potential for exports from Sri Lanka, importation from Russia and joint venture collaborations.

Exports from Sri Lanka: Spices, Desiccated coconuts, Gems & Jewellery (polished & unpolished), Canned Juices & Fruits, Cut flowers, Garments & accessories, Food items e.g.: High quality rice, Floor tiles, ceramic, granite etc, Rubber and rubber products (mainly with Ukraine), Traditional medicine or herbal based high quality beauty products, Porcelain and Large chilies

Imports from Russia would consist of Animal feed and Newsprint There could also be joint ventures on tourism, spices, fisheries -processing and canning, rubber and rubber products (with Ukraine) and fruit processing/canning.

The Sri Lanka Russia Business Council together with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will provide logistical support including arrangement of air tickets, visa to enter Russia and Ukraine, hotel reservations, internal traveling and associated services for companies participating in the mission.

Several members of the Sri Lanka Russia Business Council have already confirmed their participation in the mission and companies/organizations interested in joining the mission could obtain further details from the Chamber Secretariat.
