"Mangala–UNP MoU only a dream" says Minister Jeyaraj, "corrupt are now afraid" says Ranil

Colombo, 20 July, (Asiantribune.com): The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Lanka's former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Parliament premises today is "only a dream" said government's chief organizer Jeyaraj Fernandopulle in Parliament.

Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was speaking to a heated parliamentary session this afternoon in the aftermath of the MoU between the SLFP (M) faction and the main opposition UNP.

"According to the MoU, Ranil Wickremesinghe will be the Prime Minister Mangala Samaraweera will be the Deputy PM. Then what will happen to S.B Dissanayake?"

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe then answered "Corrupt MPs will be punished by this MoU. That's why government members are shaken now."

At the signing of MoU at 11:52 am, the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said "under the new MoU all ethnic communities will be treated equally.A more efficient government with a reduced cabinet will be brought in."

The new coalition is called the ``National Congress'' and will propose broad political and economic reforms, it was announced. Sacked Minister Sripathy Sooriyarachchi was also present on the occasion.

The MoU also says that the parties want to protect human rights and democracy, fight corruption, strengthen the economy and end the country's more than two-decade-old civil war.
