Colombo, 23 February, (Asiantribune.com):

Sri Lanka Army has provided another opportunity to females in areas of the Wanni and the East to serve in the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force.

Accordingly 100 females from Killinochchi and 50 females from the Eastern Province would be recruited to the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps. Recruitment has begun recently and there is very positive response from the public.

Upon basic training they will be employed in their own areas mainly for civil coordination activities.

These women enlisted into the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force are able to leave the service whenever they wish to as per the Volunteer Service Regulations.

Furthermore, a Sri Lanka Army Press Release pointed out that, “ Some parties with vested interests have spread a rumor that the Army is recruiting women forcibly.

Press release categorically denied those rumors and said, “There is no truth in such allegations.”

The release further said, “Anyone with required qualification can join willingly and no one would be forced to join as alleged by parties whose obvious objective is to disrupt re-conciliatory measures of this nature initiated by the government. “
