Sunil C. Perera, Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 11 August, (Asiantribune.com): A mass demonstration will be staged on 26th of this month by the Parents and the School Development Society of the Wattala Roman Catholic School against the Roman Catholic Church which is situated in close proximity of the school.Mano Ganeshan M.P.: “This may be the first public demonstration against a catholic church in Sri Lanka which interferes with the development activities of a government school.” Mano Ganeshan M.P.: “This may be the first public demonstration against a catholic church in Sri Lanka which interferes with the development activities of a government school.”

Some local legislators and academics will assist them to end the dictatorship of the Catholic Church which interferes with the school activities.

Parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan will lead the demo against the church and he plans to address the Pope at the Vatican and raise the question in the Sri Lankan Parliament in this regard.

“This may be the first public demonstration against a catholic church in Sri Lanka which interferes with the development activities of a government school,” he explained.

At present the Western Province Education Ministry has planned to assist the school to setup a building, but the church management objected to construct new buildings in the school premises.

“This is violation of the children’s rights by a leading religious body”, he said.

According to the Parliamentarian, the school manages 28 classes for the area children and the school management wants to expand its classes for upper grades.

Earlier the school was managed by the church but later it was acquired by the government.

At present around 750 students are studying at this school and the school needs additional buildings to maintain its classes according to increasing strength of the students.

Speaking to the media, area residents said that the church wants to remove the school and reacquire the buildings and the land of the school.

Mano Ganeshan said that he has already written to the Western Provincial Council, Director of the Education, Government Agent-Gampaha and the Colombo Base Bishop’s House.

“But there is no reply from the Bishop’s House to stop this conspiracy,” he said. However he plans to make aware the local legal entities and wishes to take this matter as a fundamental right issue before the global legal forums.

“If the church management agrees to stop their objections against the development activities of the school, we do not have any idea to take stern measures against this religious place,” he said.

At present religious leaders have shown their displeasure on this church’s conspiracy and said it is not a suitable decision to remove the school.
