Excavation in Mannar Mass Grave Site Stopped, on the Orders of Police Magistrate.

The excavation works at the Mass Grave site, Mannar have been stopped effective from Wednesday - 5th March, subsequent to the decision arrived at a discussion held yesterday near the Grave Site presided over by Mannar Magistrate Ms. Ananthi Kanagaratnam.

The meeting was held at the Mass Grave Site yesterday to decide about the future actions to be undertaken regarding the excavation at the grave site.

It has been further decided to continue further excavation only after the receipt of the report on the already recovered human skeletal remains.

At yesterday’s meeting, it has been decided that a report has to be receive on the human skeletal remains so far recovered.

Mannar Magistrate Ms. Ananthi Kanagaratnam has ordered the Police to submit a report to the Courts on 9th May regarding the decision undertaken on the conduct of the forensic and any other examinations on the already recovered skeletal remains.

At yesterday’s discussion D.L.Vaydiyaratne – Judicial Medical Officer Anuradapura; N.Kodituwakku – Director, Archeological Research, Colomb; Vijayaratna – Officer, Archeological Department; S.K. Joseph – Superintendent of Police, Mannar; Kanthewatte - Assistant uperintendent of Police, Mannar; Thikari Perera – OIC, Police Station, Mannar, and Inspector Wickremasekera – Criminal Investigation Department, Colombo, - participated.

The grave site has been so far dug to a size of 8.1/2 meter in width, 20.1/2 long and 120 c.m deep.

Already excavation works were conducted for 32 times and so far 80 human skeletal and body parts were recovered from the site.

All those recovered human skeletal remains were neatly boxed and stored at the Mannar General Hospital.

On 20th December, when workers of the Water Works Department commenced digging at Manthai, Thirukethieswaram Road, they stumbled on three human skeletal remains.

Following the discovery of skeletal remains of human beings, excavation works commenced on the presence of Mannar Magistrate Ms. Ananthi Kanagaratnam, and D.L. Vaidyaratne – Anuradapura Hospital Judicial Medical Officer.
