The Landmark Encyclopedia of the Sri Lankan Diaspora is Released

Singapore, 09 March, (

The recently published study in The Encyclopedia of the Sri Lanka Diaspora is the most comprehensive analysis of over one million people of Sri Lankan-origin living outside of their homeland.

A joint publication between the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University of Singapore and Editions Didier Millet, the Encyclopedia is a multi-year project with well over fifty leading international experts on Sri Lanka and diaspora studies. The editorial team was led by Emeritus Professor Peter Reeves at Curtin University in Australia, who also edited the momentous Encyclopedia of the Indian Diaspora. e Tharman Shanmugaratnam, deputy prime minister and finance minister of Singapore, wrote the foreword to the Sri Lankan diaspora book.

The ground-breaking Encyclopedia of the Sri Lanka Diaspora contains a vast collection of photos and a broad socio-economic analysis of the lives, culture, beliefs, and attitudes of immigrants and refugees from their homeland. It focuses more on the relationships between culture and economy in the context of globalization and new communication technologies. The book is organized by the geographic mapping of the Sri Lanka diaspora in the various continents with thematic chapters, including the long-distance nationalism, ethnic identities, the spread of Buddhism, the Sri Lankan diaspora’s impact on other nations, and their numerous contributions to their adopted countries.

Dr. Patrick Mendis (middle) presented a copy of the book to Capt. Elmo Jayawardena, the Sri Lankan pilot-training instructor for the Singapore Airlines, and Sri Lankan High Commissioner Ferial Ismail Ashraff in Singapore. Mendis served as an international advisor to The Encyclopedia of the Sri Lanka Diaspora and authored its chapter on the United States of America.

Before the March 2014 book release, Singaporean President Tony Tan officially unveiled the pre-publication of The Encyclopedia of the Sri Lanka Diaspora at the dinner gala of the annual South Asian Diaspora Convention in Singapore. Over 1,000 Asia’s top policymakers, global business and industry leaders, and notable figures in academia, media, culture, and civil society participated at the two-day Convention in November, 2013. Ambassador Gopinath Pillai, the chairman of ISAS, introduced President Tan and the Encyclopedia’s international advisory board and the honored guests, including the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Singapore.
