Creating New Tourism Opportunities for Sri Lanka in Guangdong, China

Guangzhou, 03 April, (Asiantribune.com):

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou organized an event attended by 187 students from the third year and graduating classes of 22 prestigious universities in Guangzhou, on 21 March 2014, to create awareness of Sri Lanka’s history, culture and places of tourist attraction.

Chinese audiences are always interested in learning about the travel experiences abroad of Chinese travelers. The Consulate General invited Miss Sunny Gao, a celebrity on China’s no.1 travel sharing community blog site, MafengWo, to make a presentation on her recent two week holiday in Sri Lanka, which proved to be a great success with students. MafengWo, is the starting point for many Chinese travelers planning a holiday abroad and an invaluable source of travel tips and information.

Miss Gao highlighted the variety of unique aspects that Sri Lanka has to offer, in comparison with many other Asian destinations. She strongly recommended the experience of a train journey down the South Coast or into the Hills, to enjoy the breathtaking views from the train. She introduced the participants to cricket and Sri Lankan’s passion for the sport. The students enjoyed a high quality video presentation of memorable places and people in Sri Lanka by Miss Gao, as well as a selection of beautiful photographs. Miss Echo Huang, a student, also shared highlights of her visit to Sri Lanka, where she was particularly touched by the friendliness of the Sri Lankan people and the natural beauty of the country. Consul General Yasoja Gunasekera gave the students a broad introduction to Sri Lanka’s history, dynamic economic development and warm bilateral relations with China.

The star attraction of the event was the ongoing exhibition focusing on Sri Lanka’s Eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which will continue at Guangzhou’s premier arts space, the Redtory until early April. The feedback received from participating students confirmed that given the Chinese people’s love of photography, one of the best ways to showcase the visual beauty of Sri Lanka in China is through photography.
