New Year, Tony Greig and Geneva

By Nalin Abeysekera

Sri Lankans are celebrating the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the National Cricket Team. I can remember how Arjuna Ranatunga guided Sri Lanka for the historical world cup victory on 17th March 1996. This year too a similar incident has occurred on 6th April 2014, under the captaincy of Lasith Malinga. It was a fitting farewell for Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayewardena. Meanwhile, the team sprit with sacrifices done by Dinesh Chandmial cannot be underestimated.

Sri Lankans are also expecting the same result on 29th March 2015 in Melbourne, Australia where it is scheduled to have the final ICC 2015 World Cup. Now the team is with wining mentality and is very confident. The cricket administration should also help the players with inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation.

We have brilliant and well- disciplined supporters (the cricket fans) who are unique. Whether we win or lose, we do not forget our cricket heroes. But this situation is different in other places. The following news item which was published in a newspaper in India after the World Cup Final in last week in India is a good example for different reactions.

“Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh’s house was pelted with stones after his side’s comprehensive loss in the Twenty20 World Cup final in the early hours of Monday, Indian media outlets reported yesterday”-Andrew Faulkner(

It is really sad to see how people specially fans are behaving in this indecent manner. A similar incident would have never happened in Sri Lanka under any circumstances. Therefore, it is important to note that if Sri Lanka happens to play the final next year, we will have energetic and fantastic supporters at MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). This was an excerpt from Sri Lanka cricket captain’s speech at the presentation ceremony at MCG regarding the match between Sri Lanka and Australia in 2012, immediately after Sri Lanka won the match by 9 runs to enter the Finals in Commonwealth Bank Series in 2012.

“The boys showed character [to bounce back after the defeat to India]. Fantastic support, it’s like playing in Sri Lanka. We lifted our game. I’m sure the crowd will follow us now, the lift that we got [from them], it pushed us in the last few overs."

But we need some good commentators for cricket. It is one strategy to boost the morale of our country as well as the team. I can still recall the match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand; the reaction of some commentators. Sri Lanka bundled out for 119, one commentator (not Sri Lankan) said that New Zealand will send Sri Lanka home as early as possible .He argued about the brilliance of New Zealand top order and depth in batting. Once Rangana Herath started his magical spell and dismantled New Zealand cricketers. The same commentator began to criticize Sri Lankan cricket selectors. That was the funniest part of the episode. Unfortunately, there was no “Tony Greig” for Sri Lanka to defend.

Anyway I want to draw a parrerell between the act of commentators and how Geneva Resolution has been tabled by western countries. They do not want to appraise Sri Lanka on winning the war as they cannot believe that Sri Lanka done this with their own, inherent strategies. This is one reason that they are arguing about human rights violations. Therefore, we need people like “Tony Greig” to analyze the situation and strategically discuss the matter without any prejudices. We have to ask those who criticize Sri Lanka to visit and see our civilization for over thousand years with outstanding architectural and artistic creations like Sigiriya , Kuttam Pokuna. Ehi Passiko (meaning come and see in Pali) is the best way; means discouraging blind faith alone, the Buddha encouraged his disciples to "come and see" his teachings for themselves, to witness the fruits of this practice through direct experience. The investigators on Geneva should also “come and see” with open mind the real situation of the country without making unnecessary allegations.
