Sri Lanka on mini-diplomatic shake-up

Colombo, 24 April, (Asiantribune.com):

Sri Lanka has come up with a mini-diplomatic shake up and it is expected to take effect soon.

Already Chitrangee Wagiswera, the last Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Canada has returned to the country and has taken up appointment as one of the Additional Secretaries in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Jaliya Wickramasuriya, the present Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to USA from 2008 is expected as the new High Commissioner designate to Canada.

Shenuka Senivaratne, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs when speaking to Asian Tribune told that her Ministry is awaiting for Agrimond from Canada regarding Jaliya Wickramasuriya’s High Commissioner posting.

Arrangements are in the offing for a farewell party to the departing Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya on 3rd May in Washington DC.

In the meantime, Prasad Kariyawasam, who was in India as the High Commissioner, is the Ambassador Designate for the United States to replace Jaliya Wickramasuriya. Kariyawasam is a career diplomat who joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1981.

Sudarshan Seneviratne is the High Commissioner Designate to India, is to replace Prasad Kariyawasam. He has never held a diplomatic posting before.

A political appointee to the foreign service, Mr. Seneviratne headed the Department of Archaeology at the University of Peradeniya and headed the Central Cultural Fund, which is responsible for conservation of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

Also, Sarath Kongahage, former Ambassador to Germany, is the High Commissioner Designate for Republic of South Africa, to replace W.S. Ratnavale. Kongahage was a former parliamentarian.

Karunathilaka Amunugama, former Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, is the Ambassador Designate to Germany, to replace Sarath Kongahage. He has held diplomatic postings before in Thailand, Japan and China.

Meanwhile, President’s Spokesperson Mohan Samaranayake announced that Lakshman Hulugalle who was the Director General of the Media Centre for National Security has been appointed as the New Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner to Australia.
