Sanje Sedera candidacy for Nevada legislature gathers momentum

By Daya Gamage - Asian Tribune US National Correspondent
Los Angeles, California 08 May (

The candidacy of Sanje Sedera for the State Legislature of the Nevada State had a unanimous take for a single reason at a fundraiser at the residence of Sri Lanka Consul General for the US Western States Malraj de Silva; a rare opportunity to send a 'Sri Lankan Voice' to a state legislature in the United States.

The consensus among the large gathering at Mr. de Silva's spacious residence at a hill top in suburbs of Los Angeles was that Sri Lanka needs to get 'heard' among state lawmakers who have direct access to the state governor's office and right onto Washington policymakers and lawmakers.

If Sanje Sedera gets the opportunity to enter the Nevada State Legislature, the gathering was confident that his 'voice' could travel through Nevada's Capital Carson City to Washington.

At a time Sri Lanka's image is being tarnished, having an additional voice among American legislators, state or national, could be a tipping point.

It is this sentiment that drove a very large gathering to Consul General Malraj de Silva's residence at short notice for a political discourse and raise funds for Mr. Sedera's campaign for Democratic Party nomination in Nevada.

Former Sri Lankan military personnel were seen in large numbers joining their former Army colleague Malraj de Silva in support of Sanje Sedera candidacy.

All of them had served with the current Sri Lanka defense secretary Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the military to defeat separatism and terrorism that plagued this South Asian nation for twenty six years.

Sri Lanka Consul General Malraj de Silva explained to the gathering the importance of Mr. Sedera's candidacy to the Sri Lankan nation to be another voice that could reach the policymakers and lawmakers in America.

This writer gave a brief description of the threat Sri Lanka is currently facing activated by professionals who once worked very closely with Sri Lanka's terror movement the LTTE to divide the nation. He said that threat still persists with distorted and fabricated picture given to Western lawmakers and policymakers with the objective of bifurcating Sri Lanka which the LTTE terror campaign endeavored to achieve for twenty six years.

The initial endeavor is for Mr. Sedera to obtain Democratic Party nomination this June to contest a safe Democratic legislative district in November, and one could see an increased enthusiasm generated during these few months with Los Angeles joining the fray, this writer told the gathering.

Mr. Sedera could join hands with the emerging voices throughout the United States to bury the anti-Sri Lanka distortions and fabrications.

Sanje Sedera addressing the gathering said that as much as he would be committed to his constituents if elected he will take all efforts to help Sri Lanka get her rightful place among lawmakers of Nevada and beyond.

The former Sri Lanka military personnel will join others to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada in mid-May to campaign in Nevada Assembly District 34. Mr. Sedera being an old student at Colombo's Ananda College is joined by former Anandians at this Las Vegas campaign event, this writer was told.
