416 Former Volunteer Teachers Posted as Teachers Assistants: Another already absolved 508 Volunteer Teachers to be trained

Colombo, 15 May, (Asiantribune.com):

Northern Provincial Ministry of Education has posted 416 former Volunteer Teachers as ‘Teachers Assistants’, after undergoing 2 years teachers training at Kopay Teachers Training Colleges. Also it has been decided that another batch of 508 former Volunteer Teachers, who have been already absolved in the Provincial Education Service to be given 2-year training at Kopay Teachers Training College.

Those 416 Teachers Assistants who were presently posted were those who earlier served as Volunteer Teachers and were absolved in the Provincial Education Service in 2009.

Out of them, 62 were above 45 years and Asian Tribune learnt that they are not entitled for any pension benefits and they were posted to schools in Vadamaradchchy East, Valikamam and Islands.

Another 100 - some are feeding mothers, some on family-way and others produced medical certificates and they were posted for a period of 2 years to schools in Valikamam and Islands and later after completion of 2 years, they are supposed to work for 4 years in Vanni.

The balance 254 had been posted to schools in the Vanni region.

Furthermore, in 2013 Cabinet of Ministers gave approval to 539 Volunteer Teachers for appointment in schools where they taught, but only 508 assumed duties in July 2013.

For the balance 31 vacancies, Provincial Education Ministry was unable to appoint any remaining Volunteer teachers who worked as volunteer teachers, because earlier the Cabinet of Ministers when they gave approval to 539 volunteer teachers it gave approval by naming each of them.

Asian Tribune learnt that pressure is mounting in the Provincial Education Ministry to absolve all those remaining volunteer teachers who have served more than three years in school even if they have not passed three subjects in the Advance Level.

It is suggested that those Volunteer Teachers who have not obtained three passes in the A Level should be considered for absolving in the permanent service and they should be given a time period of one to two years to complete their three subject pass in the A Level.
