Tiger agents in UK change their minds about charging Karuna with war crimes

London, 06 November,( The agents of Tamil Tigers in Britain have changed their minds about initiating legal action against Karuna Amman in UK. They were planning to charge him with war crimes and crimes against humanity and block his deportation. But their legal advisors have told them that it would lead to serious consequences to the Tamil Tigers.

The Tiger agents are now trotting out the excuse that it would be a costly exercise.

Tamil Tiger agents have been told that if they put Karuna on trial he will spill he beans on Velupillai Prabhakaran. Karuna who was No:2 to Prabhakaran knows the inner secrets and he is most likely to say in defence that he was carrying out the orders of Prabhakaran, implicating the Tiger leader as well. Though carrying out orders is no legal defence Karna’s intention will be taken down Prabhakaran with him. He could even appear as a witness against Prabhakaran in a future trial against Prabhakaran in the International Criminal Court.

Rights groups, however, are pressuring the British government to try Karuna for war crimes. Karuna, who was the former commander of the Tiger break-away group in the east, is accused of the same charges against Prabhakaran: child soldier recruitment, extortion, torture, ethnic cleansing etc.

The British Home Office said late on Friday Karuna was detained after a joint operation between the police and immigration authorities.

Britain is a signatory to the International Criminal Court, which has charged a Congolese rebel with child recruitment, but Sri Lanka is not and the ICC is not investigating the conflict in the island. The future of Karuna is now hanging in the balance. Britain has yet to announce their next move.

In the meantime, in the east the STF has increased security fearing an outbreak of clash between Karuna and his rivals in the Pillaiyan faction – the breakaway group from Karuna. Now that Karuna is in British custody Pillayan is likely to make a move to take full control.

Latest reports state that Karuna’s group and Pilyan cadres have clashed. It is reported that one cadre Theleepan, one from Karuna’s group, has swallowed a cyanide pill.
