US Sets an Example

By Jaya Rohana

The US Government handed over Radar based maritime surveillance system and several Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) to the Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday (08 November) during a brief function at Trincomalee.

The US Government's assistance to enhance the maritime surveillance capabilities of the Sri Lanka Navy came at a time when the Sri Lanka Navy has shown that she is very much capable of not only destructing Tiger attack crafts in close quarter battles, but is also capable in destroying the Tiger international maritime network. Destruction of ten such tiger vessels which termed as floating warehouses is the best example one can quote.

Analysing our conflict, many have argued that it's the Navy that should have been strengthen above the rest as it is quite obvious being an Island nation. When other countries in the region has gone to achieve better platforms for surveillance along with modern technological aspects, the Sri Lanka Navy have performed better than many navies in the region when it comes to real time war scenarios. The capabilities and assets have been used with great care and extensive planning to suit the present day scenarios.

On this backdrop, the US Government by providing valuable equipment have given a clear and strong message to the rest of the countries and that is to come and assist Sri Lanka to fight the menace of Tiger terrorism. Being the leader in fighting the war against terrorism, the US Government has set an example by assisting Sri Lanka to fight against LTTE out at sea.

It is important to understand that terrorism from the world can be eradicated only if those countries that fight against terrorism is united and lends a helping hand to each other.

One can proscribe Tiger terrorist for the sake of making Sri Lanka feel comfortable and at the same time leave a huge margin for them (Tigers) to conduct numerous activities in those banned countries. We today understand that many have done exactly that for our country and it's true to say that at the end of the day Sri Lanka will mark a victory but those who "talk only" against terrorism will face the repercussions.

Still we as Sri Lankans do believe, we can make a marked victory against Tiger terrorism in order to eradicate LTTE from this country and keeping this in mind, we salute the US Government for helping not only the Navy but also the other arms in this country. Let’s hope this trend will continue among the others too.
