FIFA World Cup 2014: Brazil and Germany in semi-finals

By our sports correspondent….

Brazil and Germany sent Colombia and France packing respectively, before being qualified to the semi-finals in the current tournament.

The heated match between Colombia and Brazil was the focus on Friday, as it truly was a match between the two equals: the former had been the best team up until Friday with 9pts in their group; the latter, being the favorite to lift the cup, thanks to the advantage of being on the home soil.

The rivalry between the two teams were so high that the two teams were competing both for the goals and the number of fouls, 54,which added an ugly dimension to the match.

Thiago Silva and David Luiz were instrumental in the Brazilian 2-1 victory, with each contributing a goal for the side.l

With this victory, Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazilian manager, who had been at the centre of a media storm before the match, managed to prove his critics wrong – and yet again.

Colombia which pinned hopes on the star player, Rodriguez, watched haplessly his influence being drowned in the formidable Brazilian striking power.

Despite the win, there is another threat looming over the Brazilian camp before thy meet Germany on Tuesday; Neymar, the Brazilian player was taken away on a stretcher after having being injured during the match.

Meanwhile, Germany beat France while securing its place for the semi-final. Mats Hummels’ header guaranteed Germany their 1-0 victory over France. France, which had been playing well up until the quarter finals, were not good enough to match their better-organized European rival to change the outcome.
