Nominations called for Elections to Uva provincial council elections

Colombo, 17 July, (Asiantribune.com):

Nominations have been called for Elections to the Uva provincial council and would be received from July 30 to August 6 at the nomination centres in the respective District Secretariats, the Election Department said.
The relevant Gazette Notification was to be issued yesterday.

According to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya, the nominations will be accepted from recognized political parties and independence groups from July 30 to August 6, 12 noon by the District Secretariats in the Uva Province.

The Commissioner said the number of candidates that should be included in the nomination list for the Badulla and Moneragala districts are 21 and 17 respectively.

He said that the Secretary of the party or the leader of the independent group that secured the highest number of votes can appoint two members for bonus seats at their own discretion.

The Commissioner said a nominations period will be declared again if no nomination list is received during this period.

In the meantime, applications have been invited from candidates who wish to contest at the Uva Provincial Council Elections from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Maithreepala Sirisena issuing a notice said that applications are available at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Headquarters at Darley Road, Colombo 02 and should be submitted before 25th July. He also states that all former Party Councillors of the Uva Provincial Council too has to submit their applications. The Party has decided to introduce professionals for candidacy.

The General Secretary adds that that the Nominations Board will meet on the 28th of this month.
