Given below the full text of the letter by Ranjith Soysa-Spokesperson of SPUR addressed to the US Secretary of State, US Government and the US Ambassador in Colombo:

Dear Madam/Sir,

1. We have received information that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is planning several major events globally to commemorate its "Hero's Day". In connection with the LTTE 'Hero's Day' the terrorist organization is scheduled to hold an event titled, "Tamil Memorial Day 2007" in Edison, New Jersey on 09 December 2007 at 4 p.m.

2. As concerned citizens, we would like to inform law enforcement entities in the region that this event is designed for glorifying the LTTE and the Tamil Relief Organization (TRO), both of which are proscribed in the US. In this regard, we urge US authorities to cancel the planned event(s) organized by the LTTE in the US in the coming weeks.

3. The following are the main objectives of the annual event(s) to be held by the LTTE and TRO:

(a) to commemorate the birthday of Veluppillai Prabhakaran, leader of the LTTE;

(b) to remember and glorify LTTE suicide cadres died in terrorist attacks; and

(c) to propagate and promote the separatist agenda of the LTTE and raise funds for terrorist activities in Sri Lanka.

4) The 'Hero's Day' event(s) of the LTTE is a violation of the US Terrorism Act as the LTTE is a proscribed terrorist organization in the US.

5) We kindly request you to cancel the above-mentioned event(s) in the US.

May we take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the US authorities for their efforts to eliminate terrorist activities in the US and express our continued support in the fight against global terrorism.

We urge you to take prompt action in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Ranjith Soysa-Spokesperson,
