TN party opposes MR address to UN General Assembly

From Malladi Rama Rao
New Delhi, 24 September, (

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) led by Thol Thirumavalavan is opposed to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the UN General Assembly.

The party staged a noisy demonstration in Chennai on Tuesday.

“Rajapaksa, who was accused of grave war crimes, had indulged in genocide of Tamils and had committed massive human rights violations, should not be allowed to deliver his address in the UN General Assembly”, Thirumavalan told his party faithful. And he asked New Delhi to “take steps to prevent Rajapaksa’s participation in the UN meet”.

The VCK leader also asked the Indian government to “mobilise support from other countries and insist UN to withdraw the invitation extended to Rajapaksa to deliver his address to the UN General Assembly”.
Thirumavalan made out a strong case for grant of visas to the UN HRC Probe Panel to hold its inquiry into the war crimes committed by Sri Lanka during the final phase of war.

Amma’s Letter To Modi

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram has written a letter to Prime Minister Modi this time seeking a bail out for fishermen of the state in the Gulf region.

The letter followed an incident involving four fishermen of Ramanathapuram engaged on contract basis in Bahrain.

While fishing, they strayed into Qatar waters, the Qatar Coast Guard opened fire killing one of them, and arrested the other three.

The dead fisherman has since been identified as Karthikeyan. The arrested are Aiyappan, Raju and Samayamuthu.

“These poor, innocent fishermen, who (had) strayed inadvertently into Qatari waters, had gone to Bahrain to earn a meagre livelihood and support their families. The family of the deceased fisherman is shattered and seeks the early return of his body. The other three fishermen are detained in the Doha Jail. They are the sole breadwinners of their families”, Jaya Amma wrote to Modi.

Hence her request to PM: Tell the Indian Embassies in Qatar and Bahrain to take urgent steps to arrange for the transportation of the body of a deceased Indian fisherman. Facilitate the early release of the three fishermen arrested by Qatar Coast Guard.

“I also request you to kindly direct the Indian Embassy at Bahrain to take up this matter with the employer company and to ensure that the terminal monetary benefits due to the deceased fisherman Karthikeyan are released to his bereaved family without any delay”, the TN Chief Minister wrote in her letter to Prime Minister.

Coastal Security

Puducherry lawmaker and AIADMK leader A Anbazhagan has made out a strong case for stepping vigil along the Karaikal coast. .

His appeal is a sequel to the police disclosure that Sri Lankan Arun Selvaraj, who was nabbed while working for Pakistan’s ISI, had the map of Karaikal coast and that he had video-graphed “Operation Amla” held there.

Tamilnadu has already taken steps to strengthen its coastal vigil.
