Is Jayalalithaa a BJP ally or foe?

From Malladi Rama Rao
New Delhi, 21 Oct (

Post-her sentence in graft case and two-month bail from Bangalore central jail, the same old question has come up front: Is Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the AIADMK supremo, a friend or enemy of BJP? This followed what is seen as disowning of Union Minister Maneka Gandhi’s letter to Jaya Amma.

Maneka, known as a crusader for the voiceless animals, is not on the best of terms with the BJP leadership following her efforts to project her son Varun Gandhi as a prospective candidate for the post of Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP has set its eyes. She was openly ticked off for the projection, and since then she has been in sulk mode.

So much so, political pundits have begun to read between the lines of Maneka Gandhi’s letter to Jayalalithaa, which said she was glad at Jaya back at the Poes Garden home and expressed the hope that the AIADMK chief would return as CM soon. With this hope Maneka appears to have overstepped the Laxman Rekha, and invited an open snub from the BJP leadership.

Maneka’s wish is not in synch with the BJP stand that after conviction by a special court Jayalalithaa’s continuation as CM was untenable. BJP's national general secretary Muralidhar Rao brought this fact most tellingly as reports of Maneka’s letter to Jaya and the thank you note from Chennai appeared in the media.

“Our opposition to the AIADMK government under the leadership of Jayalalithaa is in no way diluted. The letter (of Maneka) should not be construed as policy statement of the party or a letter trying to influence the court of justice”, Rao said.

He added she might have thought that Jayalalithaa was innocent but “that goes for everybody unless guilt is proved”.

For the present the only consolation to Maneka is that Jaya touched deeply by her letter. “Your letter of October 7 touched me deeply ... I thank you for your thoughtfulness and pray that the Almighty may bless you and your family with all that is good”, she wrote back to Maneka to let the world know that she is not friendless after all amidst indications that Rao’s stand on Maneka’s heart-warming missive .is a legally perfect and that it would have no bearing on BJP-ADMK ties in Parliament.
