President to issue proclamation for election tonight

Today, President Mahinda Rajapaksa completes 4years of his second term and it is widely expected that the next Presidential election is to be officially announced today midnight.

Asian Tribune reliably learnt President held a special cabinet meeting today discussed about holding the Presidential polls.

Accordingly, President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected issue the Proclamation tonight instructing the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to conduct a presidential elections.

Subsequently, Commissioner of Elections may issue Gazette Notification giving the date and time for filing the nomination, as well as the date of the poll.

According to the law, Commissioner of Elections may fixed a day from 9 AM to 11 AM for filing the nominations between 16th and 21st day from the day of the issuance of the Gazette Notification and on the same Gazette Notification Commissioner of Elections may inform the date of holding the polls as between the 28th and 42nd day from the date of filing the nomination.

The presidential poll has to be held on a week day and working day, but not on a Friday.

The Commissioner of Elections has already mentioned that the elections will not be held on Fridays, Poya days and on the dates between and 13th to 15th - the dates scheduled for the Popes' visit to Country.
