UNESCO Director General defended the principles of free expression

Paris, 07 December, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Embassy in Paris confirmed that Ambassador in France and Permanent Delegate to the UNESCO, Chitranganee Wagiswara have left to meet with UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura yesterday, but details of the meeting was not available at the time of posting this news item.

Earlier, Ms. Pierreboul Murrel, spokesperson of the UNESO Director General confirmed that a meeting was scheduled for yesterday afternoon between the UNESCO Director General and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Chitranganee Wagiswara.

Ms. Pierreboul Murrel said that the meeting would be ‘face to face one’ and expressed doubts about the release of any official communiqué, by the UNESCO, after the meeting.

When speaking to Asian Tribune, UNESCO Director General’s spokesperson defended the press statement made by Koichiro Matsuura condemning the Sri Lanka Government for bombing and killing journalists of the Voice of Tigers radio in Kilinochchi, on 27th November.

Ms. Pierreboul Murrel said UNESCO’s Director General only defended the principle and not in any way tried to glorify terrorism. She said that those killed in the aerial bombardment were no doubt, journalists.
