The people should decide whether Country should go forward or slide backwards at the January 8, Presidential poll

Colombo, 29 December, (Asiantribune.com):

The people have to decide whether the country should go forward or slide backwards at the January 8, 2015 Presidential poll, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

President Rajapaksa said the January 8 Presidential poll is not a mere election but will decide the future of the country, which is on a progressive track after the nation was liberated from the nearly three decade terrorism.

Speaking at the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Presidential election rally in Badulla on Saturday, the President said he is confident that the people will never allow anyone to take the country backwards.

The rally was held on a grand scale showcasing the strength and unity of the UPFA under the theme Surakshitha Ratak.

President Rajapaksa asked the gathering if they wished to disrupt the forward march of the country and put sovereignty at risk.

“You have to decide whether we go forward or backwards at the Presidential election,” the President said.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, he said the country is governed with a clear vision aimed to achieve set goals.

“The forthcoming election is significant since it will decide the future of the country. However, certain segments, including hidden LTTE supporters abroad want to bring political and Security Forces’ leaders before the International Court of Justice (ICJ),” he added.

President Rajapaksa said certain politicians are bent on defeating him at the forthcoming Presidential elections to take him before the ICJ.

“The ulterior motives of these people are clear when going through the election manifesto of the common candidate,” he said.

The President said the government protects the rights of all, which is the greatest of all human rights.

President Rajapaksa asked if safeguarding and protecting the right to live is a human rights violation.

“The government has protected and safeguarded human rights and the humanitarian operation is justifiable,” the President said.

He said the government will never allow any force to take action against the Security Forces personnel, who did much to liberate the motherland.

“Considering the severe hardship faced by the people in the area and those affected by kidney disease, the government focused its attention on finding a long lasting and speedy solution to the scarcity of purified water. Every household will receive purified pipe-borne water under the project which will be implemented in the near future,” the President said.

Speaking on the election manifesto of the common candidate, the President said that youths of the country have totally been neglected by that manifesto.

“According to the manifesto, youths are a severe burden to the Treasury. This government considers the youths as a resource. The power of youths is well utilised for the development of the country,” he said.

The government will provide 150,000 jobs for youths next year, the President added.

He said the people are rallying round for a UPFA victory.
