35 Tamil persons attempted to illegally travel to another country arrested

Colombo, 19 February, (Asiantribune.com):

The marine division of the Matara Police last morning arrested 35 suspected asylum seekers who were on a fishing boat off Weligama yesterday, the police media unit said.

The police said that the people on the boat are Tamils and residents of the north and are aged between 30-40 years.

Investigations revealed that the Tamils are residents of Jaffna, Mankulam, Chavakacheri, Olumadu, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Odusudan and Mallavi.

They were found travelling in a trawler U-791 - Nethimi, which had been loaded with dry food items for the group to consume for several days, Police said.

The police suspect that the people on the boat were preparing to leave for a foreign country by sea illegally when they were spotted by the navy.

The police said that those arrested are to be produced in the Matara Courts yesterday, but it is learnt as the investigation was not complete yesterday, they are to be be produced in the court today.
