Colombo, 26 February, (

Chief Magistrate of Colombo, Gihan Pilapitiya, yesterday ordered former Minister Wimal Weerawansa's wife, Sashi Weerawansa, who has been taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly submitting false information to the Department of Emigration and Immigration and obtaining a passport as well as for preparing false documents, be detained until 4 March.

Prison officials produced the suspect in this case, Ranasinghe Randunu Mudiyanselage Sirija Udayanthi alias Sashi Weerawansa in Court yesterday.

Submitting facts, President's Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe, who appeared for the suspect, together with a group of lawyers, submitted that she had not produced any forged documents to the Immigration and Emigration Department or to the Department of Registration of Persons, requested that his client be released on bail on any condition.

At the outset, CID ASP A. Senaratne appearing for the prosecution objected to the suspect being released on bail and submitted that the investigations into the complaint against Sashi Weerawansa has not been completed.

The Judge directed the CID and the Department for Registration of Persons to forward comprehensive reports in connection with their investigations into the case of Sashi Weerawansa.

The Chief Magistrate ordered the CID to take into custody everyone involved in this incident and those who provided assistance and abetted in this issue.

A group of people, including Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila, were present at the Court.
