British High Commissioner James Dauris Visits Kandy

Colombo, 01 May (

The newly-appointed British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, James Dauris, yesterday made his first official visit to Kandy.

He paid his respects at the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, and called on the Most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of the Malwatte Chapter. They spoke about the importance of inter-faith dialogue in Sri Lanka and around the world.

Speaking to the media, the High Commissioner said: “I am delighted to be in Sri Lanka and to see Kandy on my first official visit as British High Commissioner. This historically important city plays a central part in the faith of so many Sri Lankans. I am very glad to have had this early opportunity to pay my respects at the Sacred Temple and to have called on the Venerable Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter. I am looking forward to meeting representatives of Sri Lanka’s many communities, all of whom together make this country unique.”

Mr Dauris also met the Governor of the Central Province, Suranganie Ellawala; the Bishop of Kandy, Rt. Rev. Dr Joseph Vianney Fernando; and the Mayor of Kandy, Mahendra Ratwatte.

He visited the Garrison Cemetery and the British Council office, and will be laying a wreath at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery on Friday.
