John Kerry arrives

Colombo, 02 May, (

US Secretary of State John Kerry just arrived in Colombo, for his first trip to the country, the US State Department stated in a release.

This is the first official visit by an US Secretary of State since that of William Pierce Rogers in 1972. Secretary of State Colin Powell visited Sri Lanka following the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2005.

The 35-member delegation was welcomed by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the air port.

A senior State Department official, who briefed reporters on the visit, said Kerry's visit would focus on early efforts by Sirisena to advance democracy and human rights, tackle corruption, and launch a process of national reconciliation.

Kerry will meet with President Maithripala Sirisena.

Kerry will pay a courtesy call on President Maithripala Sirisena and hold wide ranging discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweer,. as well as R. Sampanthan, who heads the main ethnic Tamil political party.

He will deliver a special guest lecture on the invitation of the Foreign Minister and attend several other engagements in Colombo. Secretary Kerry will also visit Kenya on May 3 Djibouti on May 5.
