Meeting of MR & MS a non-starter? A reality? Doubts hang in the air!

Colombo, 06 May, (Asiantribune.com):

Much awaited meeting of incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to l take place at the Parliamentry Complex at 1.30 p.m. today.

Presidential Media Unit said the meeting between the duo will take place tomorrow at 1.30p.m. at the president's office at Parliament.

The meeting was requested by a group of MPs led by Kumara Welgama in a bid to do away differences between the two leaders before next general election.

In the meantime, a bombshell was dropped yesterday by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Media Spokesman Rohan Welivita that Rajapaksa was not made aware of a meeting between him and President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday.

It was earlier reported that Sirisena and Rajapaksa will meet at Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday. However, Welivita said that Rajapaksa was unaware of an impending meeting. He also said that this could be a deliberate attempt to portray Rajapaksa as the one who backed off from such a meeting, if it was not held.

If in case the meeting takes place as scheduled, it was reported that a three Members of Parliament are included in the delegation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa when the latter meets President Maithripala Sirisena at the Parliamentry Complex today.

The Parliamentarians are Dullas Alahapperuma, Kumara Welgama and Bandula Gunawardena. According to former Minister Gamini Lokuge, no party has laid conditions for the meeting.

It is learnt that Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha are in the delegation of President Maithripala Sirisena.
