Vesak 2015 at Dharma Vijaya in Los Angeles

By Dr. Stephen Long - Los Angeles, California

The all-day and evening Vesak celebration at Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara in Los Angeles began early with nearly 50 people taking Eight Precepts and spending the day in a meditation retreat. An initiation ceremony was held mid-morning, and five individuals became Upasakas and Dhammacaris.

The evening program commenced with the youngest group of children from Sunday School competing in the Pali chanting event. It was followed by the oratory competition, and then a debate by the oldest students on “Is Buddhism a Philosophy or is it a Way of Life?”

An appeal went out to raise funds for survivors of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, and $6,000 was raised for the families of two Nepali monks, Ven. Nepali Veneeta and Ven. Nepali Dhammapala, who reside in Southern California.

The children then presented a drama based on the Daddabha Jataka, which was written and directed by Sunil Semasinghe. Afterwards the combined group of students, along with talented temple musicians, performed Bhakti Gita for the appreciative audience.

At the end of the event Ven. Piyananda presented gifts to each and every child, who left the temple feeling happy
