Mahinda Celebrates Victory Day

Colombo, 20 May, (Asiantribune.com):

The annual Victory Day celebration organised by the Dinudehshya Surakeeme Jathika Vyaparaya (National Movement to Safeguard Motherland was held at the Vihara Maha Devi Open Air Theatre Colombo on Monday (May 18).

The ceremony under the theme, Viruvan Dina Dun Mavubima Rekagamu (Protect the Motherland Liberated by Heroes) was held under the patronage of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived waving at those gathered at Vihara Maha Devi Park to celebrate the country’s triumph over LTTE terrorism on May 19, 2009.

Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and ex-navy commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda joined the former President in commemorating those who had sacrificed their lives to defeat terrorism.

In his address, former President Rajapaksa said that the successive previous governments failed to defeat the LTTE because they were always prepared to kneel before the terrorists.

“The foreign elements also attempted to convince me that it is an ‘impossible’ task to defeat the LTTE. But I took the crucial decision to fight against them (LTTE) for the sake of our country,” he added.

“Anyone can make false allegations against me,” he said, adding that thus he would not let any parties to harm the country in their bid to take revenge from him.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on the people to remember the sacrifice made by the soldiers during the war.
Rajapakasa - who was President when the LTTE was defeated and the war ended, said that the sacrifices of the soldiers during the war can never be forgotten.
