EPDP – At last to test its strength in Jaffna

By K.T.Rajasingham
Colombo, 11 July, (Asiantribune.com):

Eelam Peoples Democratic Alliance which was overshadowed by the UPFA, during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure of office from 2005 Nov till January 2015, has now come forward to establish it party’s identity and stance by coming forward contest in its own party and its Veen symbol in the upcoming Parliamentary election.

The move is said to be an experiment of truth to test its popularity in the Jaffna district.

The last time EPDP contested in its own party was in the 2004 Parliamentary election and polled 18,612 votes, which was 6.55% percentage of total votes polled and managed to win a single seat, despite the peak level popularity enjoyed by the LTTE and its leader Velupillai Prabhaharan.

Yesterday at 10.am, which was considered as the auspicious time of the EPDP and filed the nomination paper at the district Secretary’s office, Jaffna.

EPDP delegation led by its Secretary General and former parliamentarian Douglas Devananda without any fanfare the delegation quietly walked to the District Secretariat and filed their nomination paper.

Local political observers are of the view that EPDP has this time selected its candidates from 10 different places in the district, which might help them to garner supports from the entire electoral district.

The three former parliamentarian including Douglas Devananda’s names are in the list, except that of Jagathieswaran (Jana) a former EPDP member of Parliament and since of late the spokesman of the party.

Posters depicting the picture of Douglas Devananda are seen posted all over Jaffna District.
