Voting for General Election 2015 commenced shortly

Colombo, 17 August, (Asiantribune.com):

Voting for General Election 2015, l commenced shortly at 7am and will end at 4pm.

The Elections Commissioner requests all eligible to vote early and go to the polling centre with a valid ID.

A total of 15,044,490 registered voters in 22 electoral districts are eligible to cast their ballots today, in the country’s 15th General Election since 1947.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya urged all voters to cast their vote as early as possible today.

A total of 6,151 candidates are in the fray from 501 political parties and Independent groups. Out of the 225 representatives in Parliament, 196 members are elected from the electoral districts while the remaining 29 members are appointed from the National List.

The Commissioner said he would not hesitate to annul the results of any polling station where irregularities or election law violations were reported.

Additional Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohammed said the voting would start at 7.00 a.m. and end at 4.00 p.m.

“Island wide 12,314 polling stations and 1,600 counting centres have been set up for today’s election. Around 195,000 officers are involved in election duty. Out of them 125,000 officials are deployed at polling stations, while another 70,000 officials are deployed at the counting centers,” he said.

He said the Secretariat would be able to announce the first postal vote result between 11.00 p.m. to midnight today.

Mohammed said the final result could be issued by noon tomorrow.

“The preferential vote results would be announced later in the night on Tuesday,” he added. Around 75,000 police and STF personnel including mobile patrols have been deployed to ensure security, law and order throughout the country.

The local and foreign election observers noted that an atmosphere for the conduct of a free and fair election prevails in the country. Around 30,000 local and foreign polls observers are involved in monitoring the Parliamentary elections.
