A Saudi court orders a Sri Lankan domestic worker stoned to death

Colombo, 21 November, (Asiantribune.com):

A Sri Lankan female domestic worker has been ordered by a Saudi Court to be stoned to death for committing adultery.

The Sri Lankan Housemaid, reported to be a married woman from Maradana has had an affair with a Sri Lankn man employed in Saudi Arabia, and made a confession before the court of having affair with him, foreign media reports say.

Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Bureau stated that the Saudi Court has ordered that the man, a bachelor to be given 100 lashes as punishment.

Foreign employment minister Thalatha Athukorale has requested Saudi government for leniency on behalf of the sentenced woman.

A Ministry official said that the Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia has contacted the Saudi Authorities to ascertain whether there would be a possibility of reconsidering the verdict.

He also said that the ministry would take every action, to save the housemaid.
