Major General Sumith Manawadu passed away – No details of Funeral Arrangements

Colombo, 07 May, (Asiantribune.com):

Major General Sumith Manawadu (55) has passed away while receiving treatment at the National hospital, Colombo, yesterday morning, Military Spokesman Brig. Jayanath Jayaweera said.

He was admitted to the National Hospital after being critically injured on 4 May around 6.40 am, when a wooden beam on the roof of his private property in Old Kasbewa Road, Delkanda, had fallen on his head, while he was inspecting construction work at the site.

He was immediately rushed to the Army Hospital and later transferred to the National Hospital, he further added.

“He was undergoing surgery just after being admitted to hospital,” the officer said.

Major General Manawadu is the Colonel Commandant of the artillery regiment and the Director General of the army sport division.

Major-General Sumith Manawadu was the officer, who arrested the former army commander and common candidate Sarath Fonseka after the Presidential Election 2010.

After undergoing Army training in China, he was appointed as the Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia.

After the Presidential Elections on 8th January 2016, Major General Manawaduge was recalled before the completion of his diplomatic posting in Malaysia and kept in the pool without given any assignment for some time.

He was overlooked, for reasons not known and subsequently given the position as the Director General of the army sport division. In January 2016 he was made the Colonel Commandant of the artillery regiment.

He was due for retirement in July this year and was a very disappointed person and he told Asian Tribune just last week, that after retirement, he wanted to concentrate on farming.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa paid his last respect by visiting the deceased house located at Delkanda.

He is survived by his wife and a son and daughter.

Sri Lanka Army is supposed to announce the details of his funeral arrangement and till now nothing is heard from the Army.
