Jaffna University Students Meet President Srisena in Colombo

Colombo, 02 November, (Asiantribune.com):

Student representatives of the Jaffna University, vice chancellor and senior members of the academia yesterday met President Maithripala sirisena in Colombo and had a discussion over the death of two Jaffna students.

President Maithripala Sirisena met with Jaffna University students yesterday over the incident in which two university students were allegedly shot at by the police for not complying an order to stop their motorbike.

After the death of the two University students, the students of the university launched a protest campaign last week against the killing and demanded that action be taken against those who were responsible for the shooting.

However, the week-long protest campaign was suspended by the students on Monday 31st October, following a discussion held with Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D.M. Swaminathan.

Minister Swaminathan had noted that the students have been given the opportunity to meet yesterday President Maithripala Sirisena in Colombo.

On the request of the student representatives, the President directed the Attorney General to expedite the postmortem report on the death of two students.

The students were also informed by the President that steps would be taken to grant compensation to the victims’ families , on the receipt of postmortem report.

The President while expressing his condolences over the death of two students had ordered the authorities concerned to conduct a full scale investigation into the incident.
