Eelam People’as Democratic Party denounces the killing of Tamil MP T.Maheswaran

Colombo, 03 January, (Asiantribune.com): Eelam People’as Democratic Party led by Minister Douglas Devananda, in a statement, has condemned the killing of the Colombo electoral district United National Party’s Tamil Member of Parliament Thiyagarajah Maheswaran.

The statement released to the press alleged that the perpetrators have stage managed a drama in a Tamil T.V on last Sunday to prepare the ground work to make the general public to come to conclusion that the subsequent murder could had been carried out either by the Government or by the EPDP.

Last Sunday Maheswaran was highly critical about the paramilitary outfit in his latest interview he had with Shakti a Tamil language TV’s Minnal program and said he would reveal how the terror campaign in Jaffna was being managed from Colombo. He had vowed in the Shakti TV's Minnal program that he would come up with in-depth details when the parliament meets on 08 January.

But EPDP’s press statement went on to further allege that as expected, the same T.V, immediately after the murder telecasted those interviews in order to divert the attention of the people and to mislead the general public from the real culprits.

Given below the full text of the press statement released by EPDP condemning the brutal murder of T.Maheswaran in a hindu temple on 1st January:

The EPDP vehemently denounces the murder of Mr.Maheswaran, M.P.

“The EPDP strongly condemns the killing of Parliamentarian Mr.Maheswaran that took place inside a temple as 2008 dawned. Though the EPDP never subscribe to his opportunistic and self serving politics or other activities, we always defended the freedom of expression of every individual including that of Maheswaran.

“The perpetrators have stage managed a drama in a Tamil T.V on last Sunday to prepare the ground work to make the general public to come to conclusion that the subsequent murder could had been carried out either by the Government or by the EPDP. As expected, the same T.V, immediately after the murder telecasted those interviews in order to divert the attention of the people and to mislead the general public from the real culprits.

“As usual, the LTTE and their media experts gave their valuable opinions that the EPDP had committed this murder to take revenge for his utterances. In spite of severe constraints, the EPDP managed to remain in politics because we know the nuances of politics. We will be the last to get carried away and commit crime by the provocative, veritable slang of the infamous media experts.

“Continued violence had taken its toll and the lives of many politicians were snatched for their different political opinion in this country. It may be recalled that Mr.Maheswaran was prevented from contesting the elections in Jaffna by the LTTE and they shot him at an election rally in Colombo in 2004 when he contested the Colombo electorate.

“As a party that has been at the receiving end of the political violence and lost many valuable lives (over 70 members), we have been vociferous in condemning these killings in the past. We have been used as the scapegoats by the LTTE and the interested parties who are envious of our successes and survival in politics despite serious threats to our lives. As the EPDP is used to this type of political mudslinging by those who promote terrorism, we pay little attention to this preplanned, orchestrated disinformation campaign by our political enemies.

We express our condolences to the family members and the supporters of T.Maheswaran. "
