Karuna Amman – Arrested & Remanded

Colombo, 30 November, (

Former Minister Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, also known as Karuna Amman, who was arrested on charges of misusing a state vehicle by the FCID, was ordered to be remanded yesterday till December 7 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya.

He was summoned before the Financial Crimes Investigation Department (FCID) this morning and subsequently was taken into Police custody.

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) had complained that Karuna Amman, allegedly misused a state vehicle belonging to the Presidential Secretariat and therefore, he had abused public property.

Counsels Indika Giragama, Nirosha Siriwardena and Yasindu Lokunarangoda appeared for the suspect. Counsel Giragama told the Court that after the poll of August 17, 2015 Karuna Amman had written to the Presidential Secretariat, requesting that the vehicle be taken back.

But there was no response to that request. The vehicle had been in a garage and not used by the suspect after August 13, 2015. He was given a vehicle because there were threats to his life.
