Basil Rajapaksa had left for the United States

Colombo, 12 December, (Asiantribune.com):

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa had left for the United States yesterday for medical purposes, the Media Spokesperson for Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPJP), Sanjeewa Edirimanne said.

A travel ban on Rajapaksa was recently lifted when he was granted permission last week to travel overseas for medical reasons.

A travel ban was imposed due to ongoing cases that were filed against him and the former Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke, at the Colombo High Court for five separate charges which include the financial fraud of Rs 2.9 billion from funds of the Department of Divi Neguma. His travel ban was lifted for three months.

Rajapaksa was granted permission to travel overseas by the Colombo High Court, under strict bail conditions, including four sureties of Rs 50 million each.

Rajapaksa left the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) last month and joined the recently formed SLPJP. Edirimanne further noted that Rajapaksa would arrive back to the country as soon has his medical treatment is completed in order to serve the party and the people.
