Bodies of 11 killed in accident at Chavakachcheri brought to Colombo

Colombo, 19 December, (Asiantribune.com):

The bodies of 11 people who died in an accident at Chavakachcheri on Saturday 17th December were brought to Colombo yesterday.

Bodies of 10 people out of the 11 who died were airlifted from Pallali Airport to Ratmalana Airport. The other body was taken on land route to Colombo.

The deceased were residents of Horana and among them were six members of the same family. Their bodies were then taken to Horana for funeral arrangements.

All those who perished in the accident which took place on 17th when a passenger van carrying pilgrims to Jaffna collided head on with a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus at the 302 km post in Chavakachcheri on the A9 road on Saturday afternoon, killing 11 and injuring another 21.

The passenger van was carrying pilgrims who were heading towards Nagadeepa. Five women and six men are among those killed in the accident.

According to Police, the driver of the van had fallen sleep and it had collided with the bus which was heading from Jaffna to Vavuniya. Out of the 12 people in the van, 11 were killed and the only survivor, is currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna hospital. His condition is said to be critical.

The driver of the SLTB bus too has been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital with serious injuries.

Around 10 passengers on board the bus too had been injured and are currently warded at the Chavakachcheri hospital.
